Office with bike storage lets you cycle to work without worrying about your bike getting stolen, damaged, or rained on while you're at your desk.

If you've ever locked your bike to a random railing and spent the day anxious about it, you know why proper storage matters. Modern bikes cost anywhere from £500 to £5,000+. Leaving them on the street isn't an option.

Why Bike Storage Matters

Cycling to work is faster than the Tube for most London journeys under 5 miles. It's free, it keeps you fit, and you skip the crowds entirely.

But all those benefits disappear if you can't safely store your bike at the other end.

The biggest barriers to cycling to work aren't fitness or distance—they're practical. Where do I put my bike? Will it get stolen? What if it rains? What do I do when I arrive sweaty?

Good bike storage solves the first three. Showers and changing facilities solve the fourth.

What Good Bike Storage Looks Like

Not all bike storage is equal. A rack outside the building isn't the same as a secure room inside it.

What to look for:

Security

  • Indoor storage (not just outdoor racks)
  • Access control (key fob, code, or swipe card)
  • CCTV coverage
  • Ability to lock your frame and wheels, not just a wheel

Capacity

  • Enough spaces for actual demand (ask how many cyclists use it daily)
  • Mix of rack types for different bikes
  • Space for cargo bikes or e-bikes if relevant

Protection from weather

  • Covered or fully enclosed
  • Dry conditions to prevent rust and damage

Convenience

  • Close to the entrance (not a 5-minute walk through a car park)
  • Easy access without navigating stairs or tight corridors
  • Near showers and changing facilities

The best buildings treat bike storage as a proper amenity, not an afterthought. Secure rooms with quality racks, good lighting, and controlled access. Some even include repair stands with pumps and basic tools.

The Full Picture: End-of-Trip Facilities

Cyclists don't just need somewhere to put their bike. They need somewhere to get ready for work.

End-of-trip facilities is the industry term for everything a cyclist needs on arrival:

  • Bike storage — secure parking for your bike
  • Showers — essential after a sweaty commute (find offices with showers )
  • Changing rooms — space to switch from lycra to work clothes
  • Lockers — somewhere to store your helmet, shoes, and kit
  • Drying room — for wet gear on rainy days

Research shows that inadequate changing and shower facilities are a major reason people don't cycle to work, even when they want to. The bike storage alone isn't enough.

When evaluating an office, ask about the full package—not just the bike racks.

Types of Bike Storage

Secure bike room

Dedicated room with controlled access, racks, and often CCTV. The gold standard. Only building occupants can enter, and bikes are protected from weather and opportunistic theft.

Two-tier racks

Space-efficient systems that double capacity by stacking bikes. Common in buildings with high demand. Make sure you can lift your bike—some people struggle with heavier e-bikes on upper tiers.

Sheffield stands

The classic inverted-U racks. Simple, sturdy, allow you to lock frame and wheel. Fine if they're in a secure location, less ideal if they're outside or in an open car park.

Individual bike lockers

Personal enclosed lockers for your bike. Maximum security but take up more space, so less common in offices. More typical at train stations.

Outdoor racks

Better than nothing, but exposed to weather and theft. Only acceptable if the area is genuinely secure and covered.

How Common Is Good Bike Storage?

More common than it used to be. The Cycle to Work scheme has put over 1.6 million people on bikes, and landlords have noticed.

Modern office buildings—especially those chasing BREEAM sustainability ratings—increasingly include proper bike facilities. BREEAM specifically awards credits for bike storage and showers, so newer buildings often have them.

Where you'll find good facilities:

  • Newer office buildings (post-2015)
  • Buildings with BREEAM certification
  • Tech and creative-focused workspaces
  • Serviced offices targeting younger tenants
  • Purpose-built business parks

Where facilities are often poor:

  • Older buildings without recent refurbishment
  • Converted buildings (warehouses, retail units)
  • Smaller office buildings
  • Traditional landlords who haven't invested in amenities

In London, availability varies hugely by building rather than area. A brand new building in Zone 3 might have better facilities than a tired building in Shoreditch.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

Don't assume bike storage exists or works well. Get specifics:

  • Is there dedicated bike storage? Where is it located?
  • How is access controlled? Who can get in?
  • How many spaces are there? How many cyclists currently use it?
  • Is there a waiting list?
  • What type of racks? Can I lock my frame and both wheels?
  • Can it accommodate e-bikes or cargo bikes?
  • Is it covered or fully enclosed?
  • Are there showers? How many? Mixed or separate?
  • Are there lockers? Is there a charge?
  • Is there a drying room for wet gear?
  • Are there any additional charges for bike storage?

Visit during a busy period if possible. A half-empty bike room on a viewing might be rammed at 9am on a Tuesday.

Bike Storage by Office Type

Serviced offices

Bike storage is usually a building amenity shared across all tenants. Quality varies widely—some buildings have excellent facilities, others have a few racks in the car park. Ask to see it, don't just take their word.

Coworking spaces

Often good facilities, especially in newer spaces. Shared with all members, so capacity can be an issue in popular locations. Showers usually included.

Managed offices

Access to building-level bike facilities. Quality depends entirely on the building—some are excellent, some are basic.

Traditional leases

You get what the building provides. Newer buildings usually have good facilities. Older buildings often have nothing, or poor-quality outdoor racks.

Beyond Storage: Making Cycling Work

If you're serious about cycling to work, think beyond just the bike room:

  • Route quality — Is there a safe, pleasant cycling route to the office?
  • Location — Is the office accessible by bike from where your team lives?
  • Shower availability — One shower for 50 cyclists doesn't work
  • Drying facilities — British weather means wet gear is inevitable
  • Flexibility — Can you store gear overnight or do you carry everything daily?

The best bike storage in the world doesn't help if the journey to it is dangerous or unpleasant.
